Lyrics:
Koy elini şu yüreğine
Öyle söyle sevmedim diye
Çevir yüzünü bak gözlerime
Öyle söyle sevmedim diye
Kalmaz yanına
Çektiğim cefa
Korkma alıştım ben yalnızlıklara
Gönlüm geçmedi
Aklım başımda
Unuttum derim soranlara
Etmedim figan, her zaman hüsran
Deva olur gönlüme bir beyaz yalan
Etmedim figan, her zaman hüsran
Deva olur gönlüme bir beyaz yalan
Kalaha have always thrived off of that spirit of collaboration - that sharing of ideas and styles to create something wholly unique and distinctive has long defined the Danish quartet's approach to music-making which is one element that has made their music releases to date so fascinating.
Having initially come together after having performed an improvised show in 2013 at the electronic STRØM festival in Copenhagen, Kalaha's members Niclas Knudsen, Emil de Waal, Jens "Rumpistol" Christiansen and Mikael "Spejderrobot" Elkjær quickly identified in each other their shared passions and open-minded approach to both composition and performance.
For the band's second album release with April Records, 'Tutku' imaginatively continues the band's explorative and celebratory approach to their music building wonderfully off of their previous April Records release, 'Mystafa'. While 'Mystafa' boasted a more all-encompassing approach to its overall aesthetic – including sounds ranging from Turkish and Middle Eastern influences to off-kilter jazz and 80s synthpop - 'Tutku' is overall a more cohesive effort but by no means any less adventurous.
And on that note, once again, that spirit of collaboration reigns supreme on this outing with Kalaha enlisting the world renowned talents of the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. Themselves, a big band committed to continually embracing innovative perspectives on contemporary jazz have really found their match-made-in-heaven pairing with the likeminded visionaries in Kalaha.
While 'Mystafa' showcased a variety of different vocalists across the album, 'Tutku' features the exquisite vocal of Hilal Kaya as its centrepiece continuing the ever-expanding catalogue of music that they are cultivating together which has seen them translate their remarkable chemistry from the studio to stage.
Boasting eight original compositions and one revisiting in the form of ‘Ince Ince’ – a song popularised by Selda Bağcan in 1976 – Kalaha present their ode to Anatolian Rock as well as showcasing a glorious Turkish- and psych-folk aesthetic throughout ‘Tutku’.
Writers far wiser than I have in the past described music as its own language. A method of universal communication that is unhindered and without barriers and I can genuinely assure you that if given the chance, you'll find Kalaha and 'Tutku' to uphold these values to the highest standard.
